Why didn't I continue to develop UACP?
In the early stages of artificial intelligence development, I became involved in the design and application development frameworks for AI Agents. Through deep engagement in the development of multiple large language model application frameworks and comprehensive research into all available SDK designs in the market, I profoundly realized a critical issue: each development framework was employing its own unique approach to building AI Agents, highlighting an urgent need for a unified protocol layer. Similar to the HTTP protocol, establishing such a standard would enable better ecosystem development between different AI Agents and facilitate the creation of more powerful AI Agent applications. Based on this insight, I initiated the UACP project.
Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, I couldn't dedicate sufficient energy to advance this project. However, I always believed that such a standard would eventually emerge. Recently, when I saw LangChain's Agent Protocol proposal, I realized that the field was finally moving forward. In retrospect, designing UACP in 2023 might not have been the optimal timing, as AI Agents were still in their early stages of development, with relatively weak reasoning capabilities, and the industry had not yet formed a dominant ecosystem.
It's encouraging to see that LangChain is now effectively pushing this direction forward. After studying network dynamics concepts, I gained a clearer understanding: building the UACP protocol itself wasn't the biggest challenge; the key lay in how to drive industry-wide acceptance and adoption of such a standard. While I might not have had the necessary influence at the time, and though I missed this opportunity, this experience serves as a valuable historical record.

📈 Scalability and Extensibility: UACP is built with scalability in mind. It can support a growing number of agents and tasks without compromising performance. Now the following example will show how to implement a powerful agent with the capabilities to plan, execute, and reflect. This is heavily inspired by the Plan-and-Solve paper as well as the Baby-AGI project. We call it AssistantAgent.
The core idea is to first come up with a multi-step plan, and then go through that plan one item at a time. After accomplishing a particular task, you can then revisit the plan and modify as appropriate.
The general computational graph looks like the following:
This compares to a typical ReAct style agent where you think one step at a time. The advantages of this "plan-and-execute" style agent are:
- Explicit long term planning (which even really strong LLMs can struggle with)
- Ability to use smaller/weaker models for the execution step, only using larger/better models for the planning step
The following example show how to use Assistant Agent to solve a simple problem. Here we use Assistant Agent to solve a question: what is the hometown of the 2024 Australia open winner?

Codestyle and type checks
Automatic format uses ruff

Docker

which is equivalent to:

Cleanup
Delete pycache files
make pycache-remove
Remove package build
make build-remove
Delete .DS_STORE files
make dsstore-remove
Remove .mypycache
make mypycache-remove
Or to remove all above run:
make cleanup
When you run UACP, all the logs are stored in a log folder. UACP divides the logs by date, which means that each day will have a separate log file.
You can find the logs in the following path:
- windows:
/Users/username/.uacp/logs
- linux:
/home/username/.uacp/logs
