The Sims 4 (1222670) #4174
Comments
After trying to make the not-connecting-issue happen by logging out/logging back into my computer account, it only took 2 tries for Origin to connect. (3-4 is average.) |
It seems like it's only happening in the morning? Or a network-related incident? I just rebooted after a kernel upgrade (to 5.4.63), and Origin connected at the first attempt. |
Sims 4 OriginThin Setup Continues Indefinitly Issue transferred from #4193. Compatibility Report
System Information
I confirm:
SymptomsFor first time setup, gets caught on "Installing: OriginThinSetup (step 1 of 2)" indefinitely and doesn't fill up the blue bar, instead there is a timed out icon. ReproductionStarting the game I can't find the APPID log anywhere in my files, let me know if there is some obvious place that I'm missing that would have it. |
I'm not sure where this needs to go, but I got a message this morning that Origin is being replaced with a new app. Has there been any testing with Proton with the new app? |
In my case, it apparently completes the installation of OriginThinSetup, then that dialog disappears but nothing happens, while Steam indicates that the game is running. Logs:
Same with 4.11. With Glorious Eggroll (5.11-GE-3-MF), it does not install OriginThinSetup, and fails to start as well, only that Steam does not indicate that the game is running. |
Anybody else having "Online login is currently not possible" errors? Running Proton 5.13-1 in beta "next" (same behavior for non-beta version). I tried to login anyways (5 times) but it doesn't work. Ubuntu 20.04 proton-5.0-10b (no login prompt)
|
I am having problems with this morning's update. I'm stuck on the Installing Origin setup part. (I'm opted into the beta and have selected proton 5.13-1.) The Sims will launch, I'll get the dialogue to install Origin, it installs it, then the Origin process crashes. ETA: I used the process here to install Origin with Proton 5.13-2 (the newest release candidate), and Sims 4 started up and ran fine. (So proton 5.13-beta works, but something's getting messed up in the installation cycle.) |
I just get a failed to launch game:
I enabled PROTON_LOG=1 but there is no output of steam-* I do get a crash log though: |
Is this the first time you've run the Sims? It crashed the first time, but opened every other time thereafter. |
It was working, but then stopped and I started getting this issue. It will not open at all now unfortunately. |
On openSUSE Tumbleweed The Sims 4 UI elements are clickable in wrong places, about 20-30 pixels off. Changing resolution to non native and back (1080p here) fixes the issue. |
I tried to run Sims 4 on my dauther computer. It installs (no problem at all) and starts (there were some problems, but suggestion to add PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 option from https://www.protondb.com/app/1222670 helped). Steam counts time, but nothing happens. I guess that's the Origin issue. I tried a few versions of Proton. I'm glad to produce more output and logs if direct the best way to prepare them. This machine has:
|
I tried on another machine and that one was fine. I need to compare all the components, but maybe a graphic card made a difference. This machine is:
|
After further investigation, the problems seems to be with Mint. On the same hardware, Sims 4 does not on Mint 20.2, but works perfectly fine with OpenSuse Tumbleweed. |
I'm having problems running The Sims 4 on Arch Linux, when I didn't have them before. It launches Origin successfully, then launches some Origin popup windows, then tries to launch the Sims, gets as far as a white fullscreen window, and then crashes. Screencast.from.09-03-2022.12.05.16.AM.webmAny help or pointers for debugging would be appreciated. I haven't had to in a long while because of how good Proton usually is 😛 |
I was able to get it running with Proton-GE 29 (and only 29, 31 did not work). Maybe there's a regression somewhere... |
Arch and Slackware-current are similar in a lot of respects, and I just tried with both Proton 7.0-4, and proton-ge 7.25. 7.0-4 crashed on me, but ran the second try. (Which happens a lot with Origin games.) Proton-ge, I had no issues. Could it be another instance of glibc 2.36 causing crashes? Sims doesn't use EAC, though, and it wouldn't explain why proton-ge works. Are you using the patched version of glibc? (I know Slackware's glibc has a lot of the newer patches for it, including the one that fixes EAC.) No problems with Proton-ge 7.31. |
On Arch linux, game doesn't launch with Proton-ge 7.38 |
Works on Arch for me we Proton-ge 7.37. There were a few days there that the new EA launcher broke it for me but that was over a week ago. |
After an update of sims4, Proton-experimental now works. |
This is highly borked for me, on both machines I tried. EA App can install and run, except when it runs the best I can get is "BETA" written at the top in a black banner, where I also get the "minimize" and "close" buttons (_ and X). I'm unable to start the game, I'm unable to even create an account on EA website to try and bypass this whole thing (people say associating an EA account with the Steam one could help). Any help would be highly welcome! I obviously tried what's on protondb (protontricks d3dcompiler_47 and liberation), I tried quite a few versions of Proton (6.3, 7.x, experimental, GE) and nuking my prefix in between, zero success... |
EA App Crashing Issue transferred from #6375. Compatibility Report
System Information
I confirm:
Compressed log file was too large to attach, here's a link: https://file.io/GaeZ5LHBQiYb SymptomsFrom late November up through Dec 6, the game ran relatively well. Occasionally, I would need to do the "delete the game's compatdata folder" trick to get the EA app to run successfully. But, starting the 6th, I'm unable to get past the app crashing. I have tried:
ReproductionAttempting to launch the game from the Steam client |
Hello @MoW9CHh, at the moment, it looks like Proton Experimental has the best chance of running with the "Fix EA Desktop failing to update rendering games unplayable. (may require a few game restarts)" note in https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/Changelog. Can you try to let the game run with Proton Experimental multiple times and see if it works through the snafu? Also, please note that the |
Hi @kisak-valve - I misunderstood how the issue reports are sorted, thanks for taking care of that for me. I had tried starting it at least 10 times in a row, each with the same result. For good measure, I deleted the game's compatdata folder and started "from scratch" with the log, with 5x restarts. Log here: https://file.io/G6OP6N6YhQbF If I omit the |
Your video card is part of AMD's Sea Islands (CIK) generation video cards. By default, the linux kernel uses the radeon kernel module with this generation, but that kernel module is not compatible with Vulkan. https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/wiki/For-AMD-users-having-issues-with-non-OpenGL-games is worth a read. |
@kisak-valve Thank you, it started on the first try. |
On XWayland, it freezes after about a dozen seconds to a minute after starting. |
After recent update game crashes before launch. Gist: https://gist.github.com/maplehobo/aae4f6e33e389d4348b18733cc54b858 Proton log: steam-1222670.log |
Same thing here |
For those who are having trouble with it crashing just after a Sims update, have you tried resetting the proton prefix? I had the same issue, and refreshing the prefix worked. Back up your saves and mods first! 1.) BACK UP YOUR SAVES. (These aren't in the steam or EA cloud.) They're in ../compatdata/1222670/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4 (Mods, too, if you use them. I don't, so I'm not sure where they are.) I can't stress enough to back up your saves. I deleted a prefix once, and lost them. It was a bummer. |
Are Steam cloud saves something that can be enabled on Steam's side? Or would one have to raise that issue with EA? It's kind of annoying to have to restore saves manually every other week because of needing to delete the prefix to get the EA app working... |

I managed to get it working by installing the Origin client in Lutris, it wanted to be upgradet to EA desktop application and after done that I Installed The Sims 4 in EA Desktop. Then I were missing my addons from Steam so I manually copied the EP* SP* GP* folders from Then I also made a bind-mount between the document folder by adding this to the /etc/fstab file so I don't need to move the saves between the installations if I get steam working again in the future.
|
I tried that, It's the same result, the process dies after showing the link2ea window. Do you want new logs or something? I did test with the proton experimental. |
@hartmark Thank you for checking that - it just narrows down one possibility unfortunately :( Are you also seeing this on a deck, or if not, could you provide the system info for the machine where you are seeing it the EA crash? (Please copy the output of Steam menu -> Help -> System Information and Steam Runtime Diagnostics and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.) A few more questions:
Unfortunately, the first log you provided didn't give us much to go off :/ |
I have linked my EA account to Steam. This error is on a Arch Linux laptop, I have a steam deck I an try launch from aswell if wanted. https://gist.github.com/hartmark/0a48bd407f26d77d86c53c6379e86ce6 I have another machine which have Mass Effect installed so I can try see how that will go. |
@hartmark If you get the same failure on the Steam deck, that would certainly be interesting. Also, if you have not tried deleting the prefixes yet, that could help. However, if you got it working through Lutris, I don't want you to mess up your setup :) |
I just verified it working without issues on my stream deck. I have tried deleting my prefixes before without any luck. When deleting my prefix sometimes it even fails installing the EA app. |
I seem to be in the camp of launch failing entirely, not even seeing the EA app. There seem to be some reddit reports too. Tried in both SteamOS and desktop mode, tried with Proton GE 8-2, 8 and 7. Haven't tried fiddling with the prefix since in this and #6766 it seems it's inconsistent in if it helps again. FWIW, I did launch Sims 4 successfully and played before the latest update, back in early May. |
It seems to be working for me again. |
Is this possible for stock SteamOS users too? The EA app launches for me nowadays after deleting the pfx, but errors on install. |
Launches fine now after latest Steam Deck/Proton updates. |

Kind of a piddly little issue that's more annoying than game-breaking, but the audio in Sims 4 has been too low for awhile. System info: https://gist.github.com/garpu/95def66aaf29c8febfbedf38b5982275 (my sound card is an M-Audio delta 1010LT.) Looking on the EA forums, this seems to be a problem windows users have, as well, so I'm not sure if it's a proton issue or a Sims issue. |
This do not appear only on the loading of realms of magics but happens when switching scene randomly, can go the the create a Sim interface and then go back to the live mode, but sometimes it will crash as well. Every time there is a loading screen there is a chance for the game to crash. Most likely a problem with how DXVK handles the vkDestroyImageView |

Symptoms
Origin taking 3-4 tries to log in the first time I launch Sims 4 after logging out my computer overnight.
Reproduction
Close steam, log off of my computer account.
Log back in, start steam.
Start sims 4
Origin will not connect, blank error window given. (Usually takes about 3-4 minutes)
Start Sims 4 3-4 times
Origin will eventually log in.
steam-1222670.log
Sims 4 will start.
After Origin connects once, it'll keep connecting every time until I log out of my user account again.
Is this an Origin issue (I've heard it's buggy for Windows users), a network issue, or a proton thing? Reproducable on my end, so I'm thinking it's not an Origin or network issue.
