System information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) in a gist: system info
Have you checked for system updates?: [Yes/No]
yes
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
Describe what you expected should happen and what did happen. Please link any large pastes as a Github Gist.
Due to the laughable state of CS2 on Linux, I have attempted for quite some time to run CS:GO again, yet this seems so far to be a completely impossible task. From what I have tested:
csgo_demo_viewer
When forcing steam compatibility (proton experimental) the option to play either CS2 or CS:GO appears, and CS2 works fine (proton does trigger VAC though) but when trying to run CS:GO the game crashes with a segfault.
When not using proton, it only runs CS2 and provides no option to choose.
csgo_legacy
When not forcing proton, it also only runs CS2 but with extremely serious graphical issues (Just loads of static and broken textures appearing in rectangles covering 90% of the screen) which might be my fault for using Wayland (even though valve should really be supporting the most common display protocol on Linux nowadays)
When forcing the compatibility mode and choosing CS:GO, steam shows a window: "FATAL ERROR: Failed to connect with local Steam Client process!" and exits. Choosing CS2 in the menu however just crashes the game, I have not been able to find any logs
To clarify, I'm not asking for a workaround (although I wouldn't mind being able to get it working) but I'm just asking for some basic attention to the state of this game on Linux, considering that the legacy version is out now it should be officially supported and not require awkward hacks for the average Joe to play the game.

Regardless of personal preferences regarding the current state of Counter-Strike, CS2 is the path forward. With great room for improvement, it only makes sense for Valve to channel their efforts into enhancing the new iteration, leaving behind the legacy CS:GO edition. Moreover, according to Steam's FAQ regarding the CS:GO Legacy version:
After January 1, 2024, the game will remain accessible, but certain features that depend on compatibility with the Game Coordinator (such as inventory access) may deteriorate or cease to function.
Holding onto hope for the legacy version is unwise, given support ends on January 1, 2024.
Hello @MrPiggyPegasus, running Counter-Strike with Proton is not supported. You can use ValveSoftware/Proton#2704 to discuss that configuration in an unofficial capacity. (Yes, I'm aware of the mismatch in the game title now that Counter-Strike 2 is released. Issues on the Proton issue tracker is organized by appid and since Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (legacy) and Counter-Strike 2 are both appid 730, they're discussed together.)
The main intent of this issue report is already being tracked at #3291. Closing in favor of the older issue report.
