This is excellent - eventually this screen should implement the conditionals outlined by Joen here |
I don't think we need to do this. If the user has more than one navigation we should show a list of them. |
Reading the description of #50396 again I see @scruffian is right. But, what happens if we have no navigation? Don't we need to access the fallback endpoint to create that? |
Because if there are multiple menus we will list them out. Right. But as @draganescu pointed out, if there a no menus do we want to load/create the fallback in Browse Mode rather than rely on a Nav block to do that work? |
In #50483 it's clear that we should have a navigation ready in all states - particularly when there are no menus. Otherwise theat navigation section will only appear once we open a navigation block - which is less than optimal IMO. |
Now we've landed #50880 we can revisit this and see if it makes sense. |

…bar via fallback algorithm (WordPress#50321) * Normalize menu used in sidebar with fallback algorithm * Make fallback retrieval invalidate query cache for Navigation entities * Conditionally trigger fallback creation if no menus are found * Make code self documenting
What?
Updates the
Navigation
section of the browse mode sidebar to ensure that a menu will be created and provided to the user when there are no existing Navigations found. Why?
Currently on
trunk
, the Navigation section of the sidebar will query for menus and if none are found will show an "empty" status. We know that we always want users to have a menu available because:
Therefore it makes sense that if there are no menus we dispatch a call to create one as early as possible in order to avoid situations where the Navigation panel initially appears empty and then updates itself in response to changes triggered by Navigation blocks in the editor canvas.
How?
Uses the fallback algorithm by calling the
getNavigationFallbackId
selector to create and retrieve a Navigation post.Testing Instructions
It's easier to have a reduced test case. This can be achieved by:
Header
but check elsewhere just in case. With this in place you can test as follows:
