I though .trim() handled this? Does it just fix whitespace while the new solution fixes line breaks as well?

.trim() does handle both, white spaces and line breaks, but only if leading or trailing. With this change you can also paste a macaroon which has line breakes in between and it will be removed. That was the cause for issue #1449.
