RSR Mobile Beta Testing Phase
This document is here to guide people through the process we will be following for the Beta Test of the app.
Core objectives:
- Get real user experience of the App
- Understand how the App responds to different users, phones and environments
- Provide constructive feedback for changes and improvements
- Find all bugs in the app
- Contribute to the user documentation
- Become internal champions for using Akvo Apps
In order to participate effectively in the testing process, it will be your responsibility to ensure you understand the following processes:
- Installing and uninstalling the app
- Upgrading the app to a newer version
- Changing the destination of the app to move between Live and Test environments
- Feedback loop
- Allowed projects
We've been working to ensure that we can effectively communicate all items and issues related to this beta testing process to all participants in the best possible manner.
To do this, we have setup the email address: rsrmobilebeta@akvo dot org
If you are participating in this process, please make things easier for everyone by registering your email address by sending a quick mail by clicking here: mailto:lynn@akvo.org?subject=subscribe_to_beta
Check for the latest version released on Trello https://trello.com/b/RnL2OsVo/rsr-mobile-app-beta-testing-notices. The Trello card should provide the Version number and also the Dropbox download link
To install the app, you simply need to open the downloaded .apk file on your Android Phone. As at the moment the app is not available on the Play Store, your phone may tell you that you cannot install software from an unknown source. If you're familiar with FLOW then you'll probably already have this. But the steps are simple and are described here: http://flow.readthedocs.org/en/latest/docs/fieldapp/2-preparing-device.html#id1
We have created a 'seamless' feedback process to enable users to easily provide bugs or suggestions directly from their mobile device.
Within the main Settings of the App, there is a Feedback link which directs the user to the Form to be filled in.
When users complete this form, the information is delivered to the server and placed into 2 places:
- A new Github issue is created in this Repository (https://github.com/akvo/akvo-rsr-mobile/issues) - this is where the issues will be managed.
- A copy of this information will also be posted on the Trello board https://trello.com/b/RnL2OsVo/rsr-mobile-app-beta-testing-notices for information only.
If you have raised an issue previously, please check the Github Issues list to see the status or any comments that have been added.
If you cannot check the existing issues, please do not hesitate to create a new one. It is a simple task to remove an issue that is a duplicate of another one, but it is much more difficult to retrieve feedback that was not provided at the time.
We will be posting information about the latest version on the Trello Board.
If you are registered with rsrmobilebeta@akvo dot org then you will receive a notification every time a new App Version is posted on Trello.
To install a new version of the app, you do not need to uninstall the previous version, you simply need to download the new version and open it on your Android device. The app will automatically replace the existing app, and your local data, such as draft updates, will not be removed (please report any activity differing from this).
We would like to run high volume testing on the app internally, to allow us to obtain as much feedback and usage as possible. However we want to ensure that we do not crowd the other activity on RSR, especially as we are testing this process, and are not 100% sure of how everything will look.
As a result of this we recommend that initially, we only test the app on the RSR Test server (http://rsr.test.akvo.org). On this server you are free to add updates to any project, and spam update as much as you like.
We will shortly have a live Akvo project we will be able to post some updates on: http://rsr.akvo.org/project/1576/ We will ensure the content on this is correct and it's published and available for posting shortly. We will post a notice on the Trello, so you'll be informed as long as you sign up to the email list.
Once we have completed a round of internal testing within the team, we can begin to start working with partners. This will be the first topic and decision to be made in the new year. Please get in touch, or post a notice on the Trello board if you have a partner you would like to test with.
Bear in mind that the first partners to 'get their hands on the app' should be from within the Connect4Change Consortia.
