Mac OS X's built-in DVD Player configures the DVD drive to slow down to DVD playing speed, which means it doesn't make a ton of noise while you watch a movie.
Sometimes I want to quiet my MacBook Air's SuperDrive down, even if I'm not watching a movie.
You need to know the drive's raw device name. Mine is usually at /dev/rdisk2.
I can slow it down with:
osx-dvd-speed /dev/rdisk2 slow
And speed it back up with
osx-dvd-speed /dev/rdisk2 fast
