The select pane's width wasn't being set properly, when it doesn't have a placeholder, because the width usually gets set within the placeholder's setter.

Fixes #3244.

LGTM, but I think #3647 will actually fix both of these cases. Given the other PR, can you update this to just add the missing test? Then we can merge after the other.
