Adapting @czabaj's failing test from issue #8057 to confirm the symptoms. Although this PR is targeting the
mainbranch (v3.3.x), I also checked various behaviors againstrelease-3.4, and saw no divergence between the branches (which is good, but not an immediate "just try v3.4" solution).
