India has the second-biggest CS and startup ecosystem after the US. A third of the traffic to HN and product hunt comes from this geography. In fact, that number is close to 50% for Lobsters (a niche computing-focused community) which this project is a fork of.
Yet, we do not have an India-centric community to have a high-quality discussion on these topics. Reddit has become a fragmented wasteland. Only India-specific subreddit which is worth your time is around polarised politics or memes.
We are no longer copy-pasting stuff from the west. Be it technical or business. Our problems are different, our way of doing business is different, our scale is of another level, our public policy is messy, our aspirations are bigger and our perspective is different.
- To cultivate an India-centric technology/startup community around link aggregation and healthy discussion.
- To give the right audience to Indian products
Initially, sign-up would be open to everyone. With enough early users, it will become a request-only community. It would help us to combat spam, increase accountability, and overall better quality discussion.
I am aware of the negative connotations of the word desi
. so why choose it? since the idea is of an HN from an Indian perspective. The word hackernews has to be there and the TLD .in
was not available. Thus it felt desi
is the second-best bet. As a bonus, it might help with Making it Stick.
