Why is this change necessary?
The current
track_commanddecorator tracks metrics after a command terminates, but the Events it collects must be tracked inline for the given command, and cannot currently tell us much about duration of execution. In addition, some commands likesam syncmay run indefinitely, or for long enough periods of time that knowledge of their metrics won't be known until its execution is terminated.How does it address the issue?
A "long event" in this scenario defines a pair of two Events: one to track the start of a command, and one to track the end of it. Since
Eventobjects are given timestamps upon creation, this can provide us with insights as to how long certain commands may take to run, or how long certain commands are run on average.What side effects does this change have?
While this has no direct side effects, any future functions that implement this decorator will have the added effect of sending an additional two events during their command run: one at the start of execution, and one at the end.
