Update python rules to remove deprecation messages

This is a follow on from #1650 to remove any deprecation messages

it's trickier to give users a patch for this PR, since it depends whether they have that change or not.

Also I think the red buildkite run here needs attention, I think more changes are needed to adapt for the new API
