Backport of pcm5122 driver #24
Conversation
The PCM512x devices are a family of monolithic CMOS integrated circuits that include a stereo digital-to-analog converter and additional support circuitry. This is an initial driver which supports some core functionality for the device which covers common use cases but does not cover all features. Currently only slave clocking modes with automatic clock configuration are supported and most of the DSP configuration for the device is not enabled. Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@linaro.org>
Since the core now takes const strings for enums we should be constifying them (and the regulator supplies while we're at it). Reported-by: Lars-Peter Clausen <lars@metafoo.de> Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@linaro.org>
The PCM512x devices use a paged register map covering the entire register range. Implement support for this, mapping pages in at addresses starting at 0x100 for ease of use (though since the pages are numbered from 0 there is going to be an off by one when looking at the first byte as a page number). Also mark the new registers as accessible with the exception of the coefficient RAM which is a bit fiddly and may benefit from some extra handling to linearise the blocks. Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@linaro.org>
There are some analogue volume controls in page 1 of the register map so implement support for them now that we can access the registers. Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@linaro.org>

When the codec is connected using i2c, it will only auto-increment register addresses if msb (0x80) of the register address byte is set. Add helper functions to allow drivers to specify several disjoint ranges for a variable. In particular, there is a codec (PCM512x) that has a hole in its supported range of rates, due to PLL and divider restrictions. This is like snd_pcm_hw_constraint_list(), but for ranges instead of points. Use register field names from the seemingly compatible PCM5242 datasheet, as the PCM512x and PCM514x datasheets are severly lacking. Signed-off-by: Peter Rosin <peda@axentia.se> Signed-off-by: Mark Brown <broonie@kernel.org>
Using the PLL in master mode requires using an external connection between one of the GPIO pins (configured as PLL/4 output) and the SCK pin. It also requires the external clock to be fed to some other GPIO pin instead of the SCK pin. This is described for the PCM5122 chip in the answers to the forum post "PCM5122 DAC as I2S master troubles with PLL mode" at the TI E2E community pages (1). The clocking functionality is also much better described in the datasheet for the chip PCM5242, which seems to be register compatible with PCM512x and PCM514x (which both have severely lacking datasheets). The PLL introduces jitter, which in turn introduces noice if used to clock the DAC. Thus, avoid the PLL output, and use the PLL input to drive the DAC clock, if possible. This is described for the PCM5142/PCM5242 chips in the answers to the forum post "PCM5142/PCM5242 DAC clock source" at the TI E2E community pages (1). Thanks! I'll queue this up in my staging branch. so users can test it out. Since i'm heading to ELC on sunday, i'm not planing to push any builds out, so it'll get a good week of testing.. |

Just wanted to let you know that I've found a couple of bugs in this driver since I made the PR so you may want to hold off fully merging for now. I've submitted a couple of patches upstream and they're currently going through the review process. I'll update this PR once they make it to the mainline kernel. |
No worries, the 3.8.x branch is in mostly maintenance mode, which means we are really only pulling in features/patches that you cape developers need. ;) So just take your time, but if it goes out with an issue, we can quickly rebuild and push out again quickly too... |
Any updates on the fixing these bugs? |
@hmbedded how about v4.1.x? less to backport... kernel: https://github.com/beagleboard/linux/tree/4.1 |
@RobertCNelson In fact I see the bug fixes I submitted upstream have made it to the 4.1 tree so there's nothing at all to backport. Also the cape development has been put on a back burner due to other priorities so, given that beaglebone is moving to 4.1 tree, I think it's better that we target this for future work rather than backporting to 3.8. I'm therefore closing this PR. |

The heuristic was introduced by commit e62e384 ("memcg: prevent OOM with too many dirty pages") and it was applied only when may_enter_fs was specified. The code has been changed by c3b94f4 ("memcg: further prevent OOM with too many dirty pages") which has removed the __GFP_FS restriction with a reasoning that we do not get into the fs code. But this is not sufficient apparently because the fs doesn't necessarily submit pages marked PG_writeback for IO right away. ext4_bio_write_page calls io_submit_add_bh but that doesn't necessarily submit the bio. Instead it tries to map more pages into the bio and mpage_map_one_extent might trigger memcg charge which might end up waiting on a page which is marked PG_writeback but hasn't been submitted yet so we would end up waiting for something that never finishes. Fix this issue by replacing __GFP_IO by may_enter_fs check (for case 2) before we go to wait on the writeback. The page fault path, which is the only path that triggers memcg oom killer since 3.12, shouldn't require GFP_NOFS and so we shouldn't reintroduce the premature OOM killer issue which was originally addressed by the heuristic. As per David Chinner the xfs is doing similar thing since 2.6.15 already so ext4 is not the only affected filesystem. Moreover he notes: : For example: IO completion might require unwritten extent conversion : which executes filesystem transactions and GFP_NOFS allocations. The : writeback flag on the pages can not be cleared until unwritten : extent conversion completes. Hence memory reclaim cannot wait on : page writeback to complete in GFP_NOFS context because it is not : safe to do so, memcg reclaim or otherwise. [ Upstream commit 45caeaa ] As Eric Dumazet pointed out this also needs to be fixed in IPv6. v2: Contains the IPv6 tcp/Ipv6 dccp patches as well. We have seen a few incidents lately where a dst_enty has been freed with a dangling TCP socket reference (sk->sk_dst_cache) pointing to that dst_entry. If the conditions/timings are right a crash then ensues when the freed dst_entry is referenced later on. A Common crashing back trace is: #8 [] page_fault at ffffffff8163e648 [exception RIP: __tcp_ack_snd_check+74] . . #9 [] tcp_rcv_established at ffffffff81580b64 #10 [] tcp_v4_do_rcv at ffffffff8158b54a #11 [] tcp_v4_rcv at ffffffff8158cd02 #12 [] ip_local_deliver_finish at ffffffff815668f4 #13 [] ip_local_deliver at ffffffff81566bd9 #14 [] ip_rcv_finish at ffffffff8156656d #15 [] ip_rcv at ffffffff81566f06 #16 [] __netif_receive_skb_core at ffffffff8152b3a2 #17 [] __netif_receive_skb at ffffffff8152b608 #18 [] netif_receive_skb at ffffffff8152b690 #19 [] vmxnet3_rq_rx_complete at ffffffffa015eeaf [vmxnet3] #20 [] vmxnet3_poll_rx_only at ffffffffa015f32a [vmxnet3] #21 [] net_rx_action at ffffffff8152bac2 #22 [] __do_softirq at ffffffff81084b4f #23 [] call_softirq at ffffffff8164845c #24 [] do_softirq at ffffffff81016fc5 #25 [] irq_exit at ffffffff81084ee5 #26 [] do_IRQ at ffffffff81648ff8 Of course it may happen with other NIC drivers as well. All the vmcores showed 2 significant clues: - Remote hosts behind the default gateway had always been redirected to a different gateway. A rtable/dst_entry will be added for that host. Making more dst_entrys with lower reference counts. Making this more probable. - All vmcores showed a postitive LockDroppedIcmps value, e.g: LockDroppedIcmps 267 A closer look at the tcp_v4_err() handler revealed that do_redirect() will run regardless of whether user space has the socket locked. This can result in a race condition where the same dst_entry cached in sk->sk_dst_entry can be decremented twice for the same socket via: do_redirect()->__sk_dst_check()-> dst_release(). Which leads to the dst_entry being prematurely freed with another socket pointing to it via sk->sk_dst_cache and a subsequent crash. To fix this skip do_redirect() if usespace has the socket locked. Instead let the redirect take place later when user space does not have the socket locked. The dccp/IPv6 code is very similar in this respect, so fixing it there too. As Eric Garver pointed out the following commit now invalidates routes. Which can set the dst->obsolete flag so that ipv4_dst_check() returns null and triggers the dst_release(). This hell of lock chain can lead to above problem. [FIX] On the other hand, we don't really need to hold qgroup_ioctl_lock if we're in the context of create_pending_snapshot(). As in that context, we're the only one being able to modify qgroup. All other qgroup functions which needs qgroup_ioctl_lock are either holding a transaction handle, or will start a new transaction: Functions will start a new transaction(): * btrfs_quota_enable() * btrfs_quota_disable() Functions hold a transaction handler: * btrfs_add_qgroup_relation() * btrfs_del_qgroup_relation() * btrfs_create_qgroup() * btrfs_remove_qgroup() * btrfs_limit_qgroup() * btrfs_qgroup_inherit() call inside create_subvol() So we have a higher level protection provided by transaction, thus we don't need to always hold qgroup_ioctl_lock in btrfs_qgroup_inherit(). Only the btrfs_qgroup_inherit() call in create_subvol() needs to hold qgroup_ioctl_lock, while the btrfs_qgroup_inherit() call in create_pending_snapshot() is already protected by transaction. So the fix is to detect the context by checking trans->transaction->state. If we're at TRANS_STATE_COMMIT_DOING, then we're in commit transaction context and no need to get the mutex. commit d0a255e upstream. A deadlock with this stacktrace was observed. The loop thread does a GFP_KERNEL allocation, it calls into dm-bufio shrinker and the shrinker depends on I/O completion in the dm-bufio subsystem. In order to fix the deadlock (and other similar ones), we set the flag PF_MEMALLOC_NOIO at loop thread entry. [ Upstream commit 17ecd4a ] When we try to transmit an skb with metadata_dst attached (i.e. dst->dev == NULL) through xfrm interface we can hit a null pointer dereference[1] in xfrmi_xmit2() -> xfrm_lookup_with_ifid() due to the check for a loopback skb device when there's no policy which dereferences dst->dev unconditionally. Not having dst->dev can be interepreted as it not being a loopback device, so just add a check for a null dst_orig->dev. With this fix xfrm interface's Tx error counters go up as usual. Fix by checking the return value of platform_driver_register() and unregister cros_usbpd_notify_plat_driver when it failed. This is my first time asking for something to be added to the beaglebone kernel. I assumed that as it's on github a PR is the correct approach. If not or if I need to copy to a mailing list I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.
This is a backport of the driver for the pcm5122 DAC from the upstream mainline kernel. This is for a new cape being developed by IQaudIO (http://iqaudio.com). It's essentially a re-spin of the Pi-DAC+ product. I intend to follow up with the board driver at a later date.
Best regards,
Howard Mitchell
