Tasks that need help

Useful Skills

The project is definitely in the need of certain competencies. The Seeks project is an open architecture, its direction is open, and all ideas and orientations are welcome. Most needed right now are help with the following:

  • Dynamic UI: JSON, CSS, and web design for the search result pages and the user interface.
  • C/C++ developers, don't need to be a guru. If you are a guru or at least an experienced C++ developer, we need you to take a look at the code, and to improve it, smooth it wrt. to C++ standards and orthodoxy.
  • Regexp masters (we don't believe in gods).
  • P2P and DHT developers with experience to share, especially on network and routing protocol design.
  • BDB developers with time to share.
  • OS-X & Windows maintainers, at this stage, most likely developers.
  • Web designer / webmaster for our main web page.
  • Image processing developers, to have fun with image search (see the plugins section below).

Basic Tasks

Some basic tasks that always need some help:

  • Search testing and reporting of bugs.
  • Add support of additional search engines by writing new parsers (we have a shell of code for this, not that difficult).
  • Take a look at the set of active tickets. Pick one you like.

Hot Plugins

Seeks relies on a modular architecture. Here is a list of plugins that we believe are hot:

  • Image search - similar to websearch, with added capabilities targeted at image processing and search. E.g. by using OpenCV.
  • Real-time search plugin - similar to websearch, but targeted at twits and other instant/perishable bits.
  • Open street map plugin - to detect addresses in queries, and output free maps in response.
  • Ad-blocker - We have a ready to use ad-blocker that works with Seeks, however it needs a last bit of effort before going public. Come and help if you believe that advertising is incompatible with solid websearch.
  • Full searches and url bookmarks - Direct bookmarking stored on your Seeks proxy for yourself to reuse from anywhere you connect.
  • Code searching - similar to websearch but searches all sort of public code repositories.
  • Plane and other transport searches - Bored of all those travel websites? Let's aggregate their results into a Seeks plugin.
  • Product Search - a decentralized product search.
All plugins above are for the SOLO releases, see the Roadmap. Other releases will enable a whole new set of plugins.
