Change ip without reset all

I use davx with my synology. Recently, my ip changed: how can I update my ip without deleting all? Thanks

Hi,

It's unfortunately not possible to change this after the initial setup. Please re-setup the app. Before doing that I strongly suggest to use hostnames instead of IP addresses since it is then independent from the linked IP address.

If you need to change it, just create a new account, which takes about ~ 20 seconds. However, the recommended solution is to use a host name and not an IP address.

Improved service detection (which may include to change the base URL and run a new service detection) is on our to-do list (a first part of it has just been finished), but it will take much time (for litte effort) and currently there are more important things to do. If you're however willing to send a merge request, please just do so.

20 Seconds + the time needed to add the Calendar entries which have not yet been synchronised. Which in my case was only one as I noticed early enough that something is off. BTW: I did use host names. Synlogy changed the port number around. Something I'm not at all happy about.

If you don't have sufficient control over network you are in sadness whether you use hostname or IP... things change, it would be nice to be able to update it in the app without losing data...

I was facing the same issue (while having several months of un-synced data) and I have a workaround: use HTTP proxy and rewrite old address to new one.

First I have configured davx5 to use HTTP proxy and pointed it to my machine. Then I have gotten a copy of simple python HTTP proxy, patched it so that it supports any method and that it rewrites target IP to desired one (and also added socket.SO_REUSEADDR for more fun while developing) and it managed to sync my data... 🎉 ...after that I was able to configure new account and delete the old one without loss of data.

Can share source of patched proxy if anyone is interested (though changes are rather trivial).

Also needing a way to change config & found my way here - I use a domain that I had to change, I run probably 20 different services from it, and this was the single solitary thing I couldn't just simply edit the URL. Really should be a way to just simply edit the URL.

Mass edit is fine. Don't see why there would need to be data loss tho. I was able to edit the URLs (individually) on the Windows dav client without any data loss - it's the same remote server, so it just picked up the sync right where I left off

Yes, but what if you for instance specify a WebDAV URL that contains an empty folder and maybe doesn't even support CalDAV by mistake? In this case, the folder will be synced to the device, i.e. all local events will be deleted, and further sync will stop working.

In my opinion there are many bad things that can happen, especially if you "try around" and repeatedly change the URL by trial-and-error (and if the option is there, people will do it).

Gotcha, that makes sense. For me it was the exact same server, I just had to change the domain (due to an issue with the prior registrar). But yes, if the user puts in a bad value, it could cause issues.

Of course, the software could also just test for this, right? i.e. do a test query of the new URL, and if it seems i.e. >10% different from the existing data, big red warning that you probably shouldn't do what you're doing, requiring a secondary confirmation. Solved.

That's much work and error-prone. Seems a bit too much to me.

Maybe we could in the first step just mass-edit the host name? Well we will think about it when it's time for that

yeah I mean edit hostname is good. I don't see how iterating through the records & showing a confirmation if there's considerable mismatch would be error prone, but anyway, just an idea of how to make it "safe." As long as it's editable that should solve most peoples' issues.

I use davx5 to sync contacts for several phones on local network that I do not control anymore and I face the dhcp issue. Phones are not rooted so I can’t set custom hostnames and I feel like a dynDNS would be overkill to maintain.
It would be very convenient for me to change the IP each time I want to sync.
I tried to create a new account but it just lead to the download of all the contact again (and by the time I remove the old account, android kind of merged them...). If I have locale changes I cant get them on the server.

@rfc2822 I feel like I missed something here. How to you do a two way sync with a dynamic IP server? What are the steps to follow in the current version of the application?
