How can this work over file:// ?

This is probably a dumb question, but I cannot find an explanation.

Since Cordova content is loaded over file://, this plugin will run in an insecure context, and navigator.mediaDevices should be undefined. My own testing on iOS 14.7 confirms this: navigator.mediaDevices is undefined for local content, but is defined for https:// content. But this suggests that file:// should be allowed.

I'm confused. How does the plugin work at all, given that Cordova content is running over file://?

Actually, you can put the app into a secure context by setting <preference hostname="localhost" /> in config.xml. Now window.isSecureContext will be true... but navigator.mediaDevices is still undefined.

This plug-in expose its own implementation of getUsermedia once you call registerGlobal and therefor allow file:// and even support for WebRTC on iOS 10+

This will not make use of this plugin and will NOT work on iOS prior 14.2, this plugin does not require that and if it works for you that mean you are in fact not using the WebRTC from this plugin and will not have controls overs volumes and other API that this plugin offer compare to native WebRTC implementation.
