Yes good point. We should pass --format to inotifywait and update the read command to properly parse arguments.

I don't think that will be enough to cover all cases.

I have no experience parsing NULL in bash so no idea how reliable that would be.

Also wouldn't you need two null delimiters since both the directory and filename can have unescaped characters?
