I changed a really hard for non-English speakers phrase "in lieu of" to a more common.
I tried to find the closest synonym. I found "instead of" and "in place of" in Collins dictionary and "as a substitute", "first", "instead" and, "rather" in www.merriam-webster.com. Hope it helps non-English speakers.
