Design Project 1 Part 2
Based on recent meetings, I believe slightly changing the direction of this capstone would be more fitting. I would like to follow a more honed-in scope, creating a basic framework for accessibility tools created for different forms of disabilities.
This direction also allows for a more straightforward path and plan, rather than relying on outside sources in order to have the project work. Ideally, this will help on a more general scale (applied to classroom/work environments), rather than on just individual users. While I believe clientele work is a possibility in the future, I have put it on the backburner while I follow this lead.
Step 1: Create a running database of the top accessibility applications or tools for specific disabilities
This step mainly involves researching and databasing these tools in order to understand better how they work and how securely they work. I plan to split these tools up based on their target audience. This will likely include applications/tools created for (but not limited to) people who are varying levels of blind or deaf, people who have physical/motor disabilities, and people who are cognitively impaired.
While the original Design Project was headed in a different direction, I am still going to utilize the Virtual machines to inspecting each tool across multiple OS to look at: a) what the program actually is and how well it keeps the user secure b) Its usability across multiple OS, using a Mac, a Windows, and possibly popular versions of a Debian and a Red Hat Linux Distros.
Step 3: Research previously existing frameworks put in place regarding accessibility regarding both digital and physical workspaces.
This is extending on the previously explored frameworks such as the UDL, the WCAG, or WAI. Additionally I would like to explore more frameworks so I have a basis for the eventual creation of this new set of metrics and guidelines.
Step 4: Research the legal side of the issues of digital accessibility and explore the framework of laws and policy regarding it.
I believe that this will also grant very important knowledge that can be utilized in the creation of a new framework. Looking into the legal limits of what is expected in classroom or work environments will allow me to focus my efforts on the areas that are not covered or ignored.
This is by no means the final step, and will likely be much more complicated than "Draft a Document", but the general idea remains, this is where the creation of this new framework begins and will likely be the large bulk of this project. Ideally, I would also like to be able to implement it within one of the labs on campus, however, that can be decided on in the future.
The next steps of moving forward is focusing on the creation of a deliverable for the upcoming project deadline. I believe this will likely be a video describing the environments I have set up within the ProxMox server, as well as the Database of tools that will be implemented in the future.
