Smart Selection (a.k.a. Semantic Selection) is the new feature added by VS Code. It's also now part of LSP https://github.com/microsoft/vscode-languageserver-node/blob/master/protocol/src/protocol.selectionRange.md

This issue is to track the effort of supporting it.

redhat-developer/vscode-java#780 was originally created for this.
