For consistency with the rest of Kibana, Lens should disable the time filter unless it's being actively used. There are basically two cases when the time filter should be enabled, and disabled all other times:

  • None of the index patterns have a primary time field, and the chart isn't using a date histogram
  • There are no time fields to use

Instead, users get confused because they see a time filter but it doesn't update the chart.
