Hypothesis

Following Apple's HIG where possible we help people know how to navigate and use Element on iOS.

Proposal

Better support swiping as a supplementary way to access options within the app, such as:

  • Swiping a room tile to see options
  • Swiping right within a room to view the room details

Examples

Room tile

At the moment, swiping right on a tile reveals options that just feature a (possibly unclear) icon, without a label.

Swipe_Control@2x

Where it could reveal a list with labels, and we could separate them according to convention.

Swipe_gesture@2x

Swipe right on room

At the moment, swiping left on a room goes back to the previous view, but swipe right does nothing. The room has a room details view, which can be accessed via the header.

It might be easier for users to get to this view by swiping left within the room, and it would reflect the current transition of screen > screen better. The room details view has the back button in its navigation bar. There are alternative swipe content that might be useful for users, such as read receipts on a message but this view already exists so felt easier to implement/add value.

@niquewoodhouse I just learnt that Android has a swipe to reply feature (although I don't know in which direction). Not sure if that will stay with the IA work, but if it does it may be nice to have parity in that regard.

The swipe to reply on Android is on the message (not from off the screen) from right to left

We're not looking at actively looking at this issue so I'm going to remove the assignment and add any other tags that may be relevant.
