Your use case
In the left-hand side list of rooms, each room has a "..." button which brings up a context menu. If I choose "copy room link" I get a matrix.to url.
If I paste it into element web, it appears as a plain URL. For example: https://matrix.to/#/#synapse-dev:matrix.org
But if I make it a markdown hyperlink with
[room](https://matrix.to/#/#synapse-dev:matrix.org)
, I get a pretty pill:It's a shame that the pretty thing is harder to do and requires you to know that you have to format it as markdown. It would be nice if element web automatically "pillified" this link.
What would you like to do?
Refer to and describe a room and give people the ability to join it if they're interested. (An ordinary hyperlink doesn't look like a special "thing I can interact with" in the same way that a pill does).
Why would you like to do it?
Give people the choice to join/peek the room if they're interested rather than invite them manually.
How would you like to achieve it?
Have you considered any alternatives?
I tried copying the room id
!abcdefghijk:matrix.org
and pressing tab, in the same way that I can type a username and press tab to make a pill for them. That didn't work. Sometimes the input box would flash red. Other times pressing tab would switch focus to the attachment button.I also tried pressing tab after pasting a matrix.to link. No joy.
