Steps to reproduce

  1. Be inside an encrypted room with 'only mentions and keywords' enabled.
  2. Put the app in background.
  3. Receive a message mentioning you or with some selected keyword that should trigger a notification in that same room.

Outcome

What did you expect?

A notification to be displayed.

What happened instead?

There is no notification displayed, but what's even weirder is we don't even seem to receive a push notification from the backend.

This is still happening to me with my matrix.org account: a room with only mentions and keywords doesn't even send a push notification to my device when I send a message with mentions, keywords or both from another account in that room. I tried it in a couple of different rooms just in case.

However, if the problem is no push notification is received, doesn't this look like a server issue instead?

Apparently, this is still a WIP for encrypted rooms: matrix-org/synapse#16562, so this behavior is expected.
