I've used Far on Windows for many years and IMHO the possibility to open a file in associated app is one of the main features.

The Use Windows registered types option is not working on macOS 10.13 High Sierra
as-of far2l 2.1 18/01/07-3f8f764-alpha x64.

The best workaround I found until now is to type open and press Ctrl+ENTER on the current file in the active panel.

Nice thing about open is it also allows wildcards and it becomes easy to open a whole folder of images in standardPreview and navigate between them using arrow keys in Full Screen COMMAND+SHIFT+F. This way far2l replaces IrfanView for which I've yet to find a good alternative on macOS.

Problem solved, both for ENTER key and double-click! Because thanks to corporateshark, even though I don't have an Ins key on my 13" MBP, I was able to create the following entry in Commands->File associations dialog. For now only jpegs but could be for everything as the open command is generic:

Instruction how to emulate the Ins key via Ctrl+I
