📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a configuration endpoint that exposes the default namespace for clients.
    • Dashboard now auto-loads the default namespace from server-provided configuration at startup.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved robustness when loading configuration: if fetching configuration fails, the Dashboard falls back to a safe default namespace and logs a warning.
    • Standardized initial namespace to “default” for consistent behavior before configuration is retrieved.

Walkthrough

Introduces a Next.js App Router GET endpoint at /api/config to return defaultNamespace from an environment variable with a fallback. Updates the dashboard page to fetch this config on mount via useEffect and set namespace accordingly; logs a warning on fetch failure.

Changes

Config fetch flow

Added GET route returning { defaultNamespace } from process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE with 'default' fallback. Updated dashboard page: initialized namespace to 'default', added useEffect to fetch /api/config, set namespace from response, warn on error.

Poem

I hop through configs, ears held high,
Sniffing defaults where envs may lie.
A GET brings news from server light—
“defaultNamespace,” set just right.
With one small fetch, my burrow’s set—
Dashboard dreams, no worries yet. 🐇✨

Summary of Changes

Hello @NiveditJain, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request refactors how the default namespace for the dashboard is determined and loaded. Instead of directly accessing environment variables on the client, a new API route is introduced to provide this configuration. The dashboard component now fetches this configuration dynamically, improving maintainability and ensuring the application correctly initializes with the intended default namespace.

Highlights

  • Centralized Default Namespace Configuration: A new API endpoint (/api/config) has been introduced to serve client-side configuration, specifically the defaultNamespace, which now reads from NEXT_PUBLIC_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE environment variable or defaults to 'default'.
  • Dynamic Namespace Initialization: The dashboard's default namespace is now initialized by fetching it from the new /api/config endpoint on component mount, ensuring consistency and proper fallback.
  • Client-Side Environment Variable Removal: Direct usage of process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_DEFAULT_NAMESPACE has been removed from the client-side page.tsx component, promoting a more robust configuration loading mechanism.

Code Review

This pull request refactors how the default namespace is configured for the dashboard. It introduces a new API endpoint /api/config to provide client-side configuration, which is then fetched by the main dashboard component on mount. This is a good architectural improvement, moving configuration from a build-time environment variable to a runtime API call. The implementation is solid, but I've suggested a small improvement to the error handling when fetching the configuration to make it more robust and easier to debug.

The current implementation silently ignores failed API responses (when response.ok is false). This can make debugging difficult if the config endpoint fails for some reason. It would be better to log a warning in this case, similar to how the catch block handles network errors.

        if (response.ok) {
          const config = await response.json();
          setNamespace(config.defaultNamespace);
        } else {
          console.warn(`Failed to fetch config: ${response.status} ${response.statusText}. Using default namespace.`);
        }
