Instructions for the planned projects are below. However, if you want to do something else we will do our best to help! See below for other random ideas
The wildlife camera project assumes that you have your Raspberry Pi up and running Raspbian (SD cards can be purchased with this pre installed) and plugged into a screen, keyboard and mouse If you are able to arrive on the day with a fully operational Pi that would be beneficial, but we will be more than happy to help with this if necessary
- Kit list
- Step 1 - Setting up the Pi Camera
- Step 2 - Writing a script to take photos
- Step 3 - motion detection with Python
- Step 4 - serving the images using a simple web server
- Step 5 - Creating an automatically refreshing webpage
- Step 6 - starting the camera script when the pi turns on
The above projects are just a few ideas - here are some other things you could do today. We won't know everything about all of them, but that's all part of the fun!
- Set up a web server to run a website from the Pi.
- Basic Apache web server
- Installing WordPress
- Websites running on the Raspberry Pi can even be viewed from people outside your network - talk to Andy about "Port forwarding" on the day if this interests you!
- Learn to program in Scratch - This is used a lot in schools to teach kids to program.
- Play Minecraft - Raspbian comes with a slimmed down version of Minecraft installed.
- Learn to program in Python - Python is very popular with beginners on the Pi due to it's relatively friendly syntax and gentle initial learning curve. Make no mistake though - this is a professional and capable programming language and many people earn their living using it.
- Program Minecraft in Python! http://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2014/06/building-a-castle-in-minecraft-with-python/
- Make some music - Raspbian ships with a simple programming language for making music called "Sonic Pi". It's another good way to introduce basic programming principles whilst keeping things fun. (Headphones on please! ;-) )
...And much more. If you've got an idea but not sure how to achieve it, speak to us, or Google it. We don't know everything, but we will do our best to help.
