"Remake" the Official Logo for Express@5

I found a lot of confusion in dev community especially about the logo of ExpressJS.

I've found some are using ex (which is also favicon of expressjs) site. Is there any official logo from express community ?

The Express.js project itself doesn't have a true logo, no. It is just the word mark "express" in all lower case, and the few times we needed a square logo (like the github organization and favicon) we just took the "ex" in the same style as the word mark.

Hi everyone, I think it might be a good idea to use some of the funding the project has received to run a design contest on Fiverr (or a similar platform). There are many talented designers out there. This approach would also ensure we get a variety of options to choose from.

Great point, @Phillip9587! If I recall correctly from the last TC meeting in 2024, the agreement was to keep the original Express logo as-is. However, we’re open to using funds to create logos for specific events, such as Express@5 (train-inspired). So, the question now is: who would like to take the lead on this, and what should the budget be?

Honestly, I’d love to put some Express@5 train logo stickers on my laptop! 🚂

Yeah this is a great idea and also is what we discussed (and agreed on) in a recent TC meeting.

Not it! But I support @Phillip9587 doing it if you want to take lead! We need to figure out how to use the money in the OC for this, but it shouldn't be too hard.

and what should the budget be?

Currently we have $2k USD in there, I would hope we can get the logo and some swag from that. So maybe for the logo we should try and stick below $1k? If we are going with Fiver we could try with $500 and use the AI train as a starter example?

I would love to hear if we have any designers in the community who could help us level set on this, but also I think @UlisesGascon said he had recently done this, so feel free to tell me that is the wrong target amount.

Okay, I thought we were going to launch a new logo for Express in general. I missed that meeting (maybe that’s why it’s a good idea to take notes in meetings).

I’d prefer if the logo we’re making isn’t too AI-generated, it’s very noticeable when it’s created by AI.

Also, we need to be careful about who we give the money to lead this, we don’t want someone to take that money for things other than the logo and stickers. Although, well, it will be the TC’s decision who they give the money to lead or pay for the logo.

@wesleytodd I appreciate your thoughts and feedback on this! I want to clarify that my initial suggestion was simply to propose the idea of running a design contest for the logo. I don’t currently have the knowledge or experience to lead such an effort, but I’m definitely willing to assist wherever I can to make this a success.

@bjohansebas, regarding your thoughts on AI generating the logo, I’d like to clarify that @wesleytodd was only suggesting using the AI train as a starting point, not necessarily involving AI in the process. I’d personally suggest providing no starting design at all to give designers maximum creative freedom. This way, we can see a wider range of ideas and approaches from the community.

Also, I’d love to see some stickers and other Express merch come out of this!

It could. It would be a fun and nice way to celebrate the work and would make for good swag.
