not sure if that is even possible as some of the files are necessary.

It is just wishful thinking from my side, but I'd appreciate any effort to make the main folder less scary.
I can even imagine to cut down the number of folders in the main directory.
Maybe putting all files in folders in a new sub folder except the launchers?

Ultimately why?
For typical windows users an installer would be nice at some point, and once TOL has stabilized somewhat it will also show up in Linux distribution's repositories.
Everyone who downloads alpha versions as tar.gz/zips will not be "scared" by a few not immediately obvious files in the game directory...

Yes, I more or less agree with @poVoq. The game is in a pre-alpha or alpha stage now and while it does look scary, it's to be expected.

However, I agree with @mray that the folder could be cleaned up so it has only that platform's files.

A Windows installer is particularly crucial as the game right now requires you to right click and Run as Administrator to change various settings. See issue #50 for details.
