Gentoo live USB for the PlayStation 2
If you wish to test Gentoo out on the PS2 then an image is provided which is still in the alpha stage, so while it works there are still issues such as networking not fully working yet.
Please report any issues and bugs you find to here as it will speed up development.
Download image at https://archive.org/download/gentoo-ps2-liveusb-alpha1
Use the follow commands to write the image to a USB flash drive (currently a minimum of 8GB is required):
$ tar xvf gentoo-ps2-liveusb-alpha1.tar.xz
$ sudo dd if=gentoo-ps2-liveusb-alpha1.img of=/dev/sdX status=progress
Replace sdX
with the correct name for your drive on your system i.e. /dev/sdc
but make sure you write this to the correct device as dd
will happily replace your main OS install with this image if you select the wrong drive.
Uncompress the image using 7zip and write the image to the flash drive (currently a minimum of 8GB is required) using win32diskimager.
This guide assumes you already have your PS2 softmodded but if you haven't then check out this guide.
On the PS2 use your ELF launch such as wlaunchELF and navigate to the mass://
option and from there select either the NTSC or PAL elf depending on which your TV supports.
Once booted just login as root to enter the system.
The original creator for Gentoo PS2 no longer has the time to finish this project off, however all notes to continue this can be found at:
