Giving a bit more context about this one: the sitemap generated by GN (/geonetwork/srv/api/sitemap?format=html&doc=1) was generating something similar to the following document:

Each listed URLs were ending up with the 400 HTTP error code. It turned out that there were some missing template declarations in the xsl transformation. Including the 3 missing xsl files into the xsl stylesheet made it.
