***** README for zpool_spinupd ***** Distribution of zpool_spinupd, a daemon for monitoring the wake up of zpool disks and spinning up associated zpool member disks in parallel. Standard disclaimer / warning: ------------------------------ The software in this distribution is provided as is, without any support, without any guarantee to work and without any guarantee to be free of bugs or malfunction. Use at your own risk and never on production systems! Files: ------ README : This file, containing general information and the installation instructions. OPENSOLARIS.LICENSE : CDDL 1.0 Licence. zpool_spinupd : Startup shell script for the daemon. zpool_spinupd.pl : Perl script that implements the daemon. !!! Should be renamed to zpool_spinupd during installation !!! zpool_spinupd.xml : Manifest file for the Service Management Framework (SMF). General Information: -------------------- - The daemon requires the "sdparm" utility for spinning up disks. The utility is assumed to be located at "/usr/bin/sdparm". This can be changed with the $SDPARM variable in "zpool_spinupd.pl". - The daemon is logging into "/var/log/zpool_spinupd.log". This can be changed with the $LOGFILE variable in "zpool_spinupd.pl". - The Perl script which implements the daemon is assumed to be installed as "/usr/local/lib/zpool_spinup/zpool_spinupd". This can be changed with the DAEMON variable in "zpool_spinupd". - The process ID of the daemon is written into "/var/run/zpool_spinupd.pid". This can be changed with the PIDFILE variable in "zpool_spinupd". The file is created upon daemon startup and removed when the daemon exits. Note that the name of the daemon process reported by the "ps" command is "dtrace" since the Solaris dtrace utility is used to monitor the wake up of devices via a kernel probe. - The DTrace probe used for monitoring is from the Function Boundary Tracing (FBT) provider. This is an unstable provider which means that the interface can change from one minor release of the operating system to another. It might even change with a patch and the monitor daemon could cease to work. Installation instructions: -------------------------- 1. Become root or sudo. 2. Copy the startup script "zpool_spinupd" to "/etc/init.d/zpool_spinupd" and set execute permissions: cp zpool_spinupd /etc/init.d/zpool_spinupd chmod 754 /etc/init.d/zpool_spinupd 3. Create a directory "zpool_spinup" under "/usr/local/lib": mkdir /usr/local/lib/zpool_spinup 4. Copy the Perl script "zpool_spinupd.pl" that implements the daemon to "/usr/local/lib/zpool_spinup/zpool_spinupd" and set execute permissions: cp zpool_spinupd.pl /usr/local/lib/zpool_spinup/zpool_spinupd chmod 754 /usr/local/lib/zpool_spinup/zpool_spinupd 5. To start the zpool_spinup monitoring daemon at bootup we put it under the control of the OpenSolaris Service Management Framework (SMF). Copy the "zpool_spinupd.xml" file to "/var/svc/manifest/site/zpool_spinupd.xml", change the file ownership to root:sys and import it into the service configuration repository: cp zpool_spinupd.xml /var/svc/manifest/site/zpool_spinupd.xml chown root:sys /var/svc/manifest/site/zpool_spinupd.xml svccfg -v import /var/svc/manifest/site/zpool_spinupd.xml 6. Check that the service is running with: svcs zpool_spinupd 7. The service can be enabled with: svcadm enable zpool_spinupd or disabled with: svcadm disable zpool_spinupd ***** End of README for zpool_spinupd *****
