Can you provide me with some context? What type of StatsD backend supports counter rates, and what is it for?

The rate is how often or how quickly a counter is being updated.

https://github.com/etsy/statsd/blob/master/docs/metric_types.md says it should be sent with every counter to the backend.

With influx you could probably get similar data by doing a derivative but I think this is cleaner.
