Could this be a manifestation of the same issue as #1437 git status reports (non-existent) modifications after git stash push ? (and vice versa).

Can you create a simple test case (test reo) that shows the issue for this command sequence, so that any common areas can be identified (sounds like it has the same root cause, but without a minimal test case it woill be hard to check).

What does
git ls-files -s --eol | grep -i gifview.cpp
say ?

After investigation, I understand how my commit broke git for windows when git checkout ..

git's index holds file timestamp to check file is modified in fastpath.
My change made lstat return cached stat after checkint out the modified file.

When we run git checkout, checkout_paths calls checkout_entry.
In checkout_entry, write_entry was called having lstat where stat should be got from actual disk.
But due to this stat is taken from fscache, git index holds old file timestamp and git status shows the file is changed even after running git checkout ..

I should check the behavior carefully. Sorry again.

Looks related: #1442

atetubou pushed a commit to atetubou/git that referenced this issue Jan 21, 2018
This is fix for git-for-windows#1438, git-for-windows#1442
This patch introduces explicitly enabled fscache_lstat and
fix the issue stat unintendedly returned from cache.

I replace lstat with fscache_lstat in check_path called for every file in a repository.

When we run `git checkout`, following two conditions are hold.
* check_path is only called to get stat of file in working tree before checked out.
* check_path is not called for the file after it is checked out.

So cached stat when directory traversing does not affect returned value in check_path here.

It is easy to be wise after the event. It is good that you have identified the cause, and with luck and a following wind, a fix soon. There have been other problems from upstream so you are in good company. Once resolved the speed upshould still be useful.

This is retry of git-for-windows#1419.

I added flush_fscache macro to flush cached stats after disk writing
with tests for regression reported in git-for-windows#1438 and git-for-windows#1442.

git checkout checks each file path in sorted order, so cache flushing does not
make performance worse unless we have large number of modified files in
a directory containing many files.

Using chromium repository, I tested `git checkout .` performance when I
delete 10 files in different directories.

This is retry of #1419.

I added flush_fscache macro to flush cached stats after disk writing
with tests for regression reported in #1438 and #1442.

git checkout checks each file path in sorted order, so cache flushing does not
make performance worse unless we have large number of modified files in
a directory containing many files.

Using chromium repository, I tested `git checkout .` performance when I
delete 10 files in different directories.
