The tsd tool (now deprecated and succeeded by the typings tool) allows TypeScript users to download type definitions from an online repository.
Provide links to documentation
The type definitions required by a project are specified in a tsd.json file and get downloaded by default to a typings folder. The relevant section of the documentation describing the default folder to which type definition files are installed is here for Typings, and here for TSD.

Type definitions should be downloaded by the user from the appropriate repository rather than being committed.
