Welcome to the outbreak-data wiki!

Contains information on outbreaks that Global.health has tracked or is tracking.

An ongoing outbreak has two statuses: INTERNAL or PUBLIC to indicate dissemination status.

Currently active

GHL2024.D11.1E31 Influenza A INTERNAL
Tracking for the ongoing avian flu animal to human transmission events started 2024-06-01.

Past outbreaks

GHL2024.D11.1E71 Mpox PUBLIC
Tracking for the ongoing Mpox outbreak in Africa. Global.health dataset starts 2024-01-01, ended: Data aligns with WHO Mpox dashboard as of 2024-12-08.

Outbreak Identifier

A line list outbreak identifier is of the following form: GHLYYYY.D11.CODE, comprising of these parts:

  • GHL: indicating this is a Global.health line list
  • YYYY: Year the outbreak began
  • D11: indicating that we are using ICD-11 codes for the rest of the identifier
  • ICD-11 code: Four letter alphanumeric code representing the pathogen. See https://icd.who.int for a full list

Ordinarily there have not been multiple outbreaks that Global.health has had to track for the same pathogen in a year. In the event this happens, an additional numbered suffix .N can be used to indicate the ordering.

Data Curation

This section is an overview of the data curation process.

Line-lists are built using a collection of publicly available digital media sources and are a mix of official (government) and unofficial information from global / regional / national / local levels. The original source(s) of information is provided for each line-list ID in our database. Metadata are added at any time, as information becomes available and our time and resources permit. After making changes, the case will be recorded as modified with the date. Multiple curators look at each datapoint and any discrepancies are resolved in conversations between them. We remain limited by inconsistent, aggregated, or missing case information; change in reporting format; data reconciliation; reporting delays; and change in case definitions, among other reasons. Assumptions are made that may compromise the accuracy of the data. Outbreak-specific limitations and assumptions are discussed on outbreak pages.

Data are hand-curated. The process and methods to create, organize, and maintain data have been applied with consistency; however, we are humans and mistakes happen. We welcome your contributions and feedback. Get involved!
