iCloud Drive syncing between iOS and macOS

FSNotes automatically uses iCloud Drive on iOS, using a dedicated FSNotes directory on it. You can find it using the Files.app: in Browse select the "iCloud Drive" location, you should see an FSNotes directory with all files in it.

You can find the same location on macOS, selecting "iCloud Drive" in Finder and finding the same FSNotes directory there.

You can use this directory as your default storage location on the Mac. To do it, find "Default storage" in Preferences / General. You should start seeing your notes synchronize between your iOS and Mac devices automatically.

Troubleshooting

If for any reason you find that your edits on one device don't appear on the other, this is usually an issue with iCloud Drive sync service on one of your devices. Other notes apps deal with those problems as well. Let's go through a couple of things you can try.

On the Mac

If you're creating notes on the Mac, find the respective files through Finder's "iCloud Drive" location. If you're seeing them, that means FSNotes successfully saved them. Now, log in to icloud.com, navigate to Files / FSNotes and find if the files are there, too. If yes, that means they synchronized out of your Mac successfully and the problem is on the receiver end. If you don't see them there, this means there's some synchronization issue on your Mac. Try this:

  • restart your computer;
  • don't turn FSNotes on yet, first...
  • go to System Preferences / Internet Accounts / iCloud / iCloud Drive "Options..."
  • uncheck FSNotes, click "Done"
  • go back to iCloud Drive "Options..."
  • check FSNotes again, click "Done"

On iPhone / iPad

If you're creating notes on the phone, find the respective files through the Files.app's "iCloud Drive" location. If you're seeing them, that means FSNotes successfully saved them. If they're saying "Waiting..." or some files are missing, or the entire directory is empty, or it's not there at all, this usually means your phone has some issues with synchronization which is either due to Internet connectivity or low space on device. Try this:

  • restart your phone;
  • don't turn FSNotes on yet, first do the other steps...
  • ensure you're successfully connected to a wifi network
  • to synchronize over cellular, go to the Settings app / Mobile Data and ensure "iCloud Drive" is enabled
  • check out you have enough storage, go to the Settings app / General / iPhone Storage and ensure you have at least a few gigabytes of free space available -- otherwise the phone might not want to synchronize new files at all until there's more space available
  • go to the Settings app / click on your name on the top / iCloud and ensure you have space left on your iCloud account
  • on that same screen, uncheck FSNotes, go back and close the Settings app
  • open it again / click on your name on the top / iCloud and check FSNotes back on again
  • go back and close the Settings app

Now you should see files appearing in Files.app / iCloud Drive / FSNotes. Once they are there, launch FSNotes and you should see it find the new notes. Now, creating a new note on the phone should make it appear on your other device. Deleting it on you other device should make it disappear on the phone as well.
