What would you like to be added?

This issue serves as a high-level Epic to track a series of improvements designed to elevate the user experience within the Gemini CLI.

The primary goal is to overhaul the assistance mechanisms to ensure developers can easily discover and utilize the full power of the CLI. We want to move away from "hidden" features and towards a self-documenting interface.

Key areas of focus for this Epic include:

  • Shortcut Discovery: Better surfacing of built-in shortcut keys.
  • Input Bar Capabilities: exposing "hidden" abilities and context-aware features within the input field.
  • Slash Commands: Improving the visibility and documentation of available slash commands.

Specific implementation tasks (e.g., updates to /help and the ? menu) will be linked to this Epic as individual issues, along with other improvements

Why is this needed?

Currently, valuable features such as shortcuts and input bar modifiers are not easily discoverable, leading to underutilization of the tool's capabilities.

By improving the help mechanisms, we aim to:

  1. Reduce friction for new users learning the tool.
  2. Increase developer efficiency by making power-user features (like shortcuts) obvious.
  3. Ensure that the CLI provides helpful, contextual assistance right where the developer needs it.
