Unable to install version 1.12.0 of sqlalchemy-spanner through pip

We are experiencing issues with installing the newest version of spanner released today, both locally and on github action runners that start by installing dependencies. See the attached error output from pip:

Environment details

• Programming language: Python
• OS: MacOS Sequoia 15.5 and Unbuntu 24.04.2
• Language runtime version: 3.9, 3.10, 3.11, 3.12
• Package version: 1.12.0

Steps to reproduce

1. Create a python environment - we use python3 -m venv .venv and then activate it
2. Create a requirements.txt (or your favorite installer) with just sqlalchemy-spanner
3. try pip install -r requirements.txt

Note also that there are related issues and not just our machines - see this recent commit from apache airflow: apache/airflow#51379

Indeed - same issue in Apache Airflow!!!

IMHO there are two possible solutions:

• upload also .whl file
• yank 1.12.0 and release properly 1.12.1 or 1.13.0

We had to dwo two exclusions for now:

• Exclude sqlalchemy-spanner 1.12.0 apache/airflow#51379 => to limit it localy in google provider. pyproject.toml
• Add sqlalchemy-spanner limitation for broken 1.12.0 release apache/airflow#51393 => to make our "highest-resolution" calculation works for PyPI constriants
