Add rendering for historic=milestone #3605
Comments
Sounds sane in general: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag%3Ahistoric%3Dmilestone |
@Tomasz-W, that's what I was thinking. Reusing the obelisk icon sounds good. It would have to be a little shorter and wider though. I think milestones are closer to the ground and more round then obelisks tend to be. |
Something like this?: https://github.com/wilmaed/foo/blob/master/meilenstein2.svg |
left: milestone ? |

left: milestone
right: monument
milestone without the base, and obviously smaller than the monument icon.
There are lots of milestones out there, they should not be too prominent.

other similar historic icons have a base. is there a special meaning or just a case of design/style?
while a monument, bust, statue etc. will usually have a base, a milestone will not have it, typically. In terms of meaning I would imagine without a base it seems coming from out of the ground rather than being laid down like on a base.
A base generally gives more importance.

Personally like the icon without a base, coming out of the ground is what they do around where I live. |
Perhaps it could be even smaller? It’s quite similar to the
historic=monument icon shape and size (but the lack of a base helps).

The icon suggested by Tomasz-W looks fine. |
Historic Milestones are still useful for orientation and are good visible:
