This repository contains the source code and supporting files for the Hurricane Analysis and Forecast System (HAFS), which is the Unified Forecast System (UFS) Hurricane Application. HAFS is the FV3-based multi-scale model and data assimilation system capable of providing tropical cyclone (TC) analyses and forecasts of the inner core structure of TCs (including hurricanes and typhoons). HAFS capabilities are key to improving size and intensity predictions, as well as predictions of the large-scale environment that is known to influence a TC’s motion. HAFS development targets an operational analysis and forecast system for hurricane forecasters with reliable, robust, and skillful guidance on TC track and intensity (including rapid intensification), storm size, genesis, storm surge, rainfall, and tornadoes associated with TCs.
This wiki includes a Getting Started section with recommendations for new users. It also includes information on documentation and user support and information for developers on code contributions to HAFS.

HAFS aims to provide an advanced analysis and forecast system for cutting-edge research on modeling, physics, data assimilation, and coupling to earth system components for high-resolution TC predictions. Currently, HAFS is under active development with collaborative efforts among NCEP/EMC, AOML, GFDL, GSL, ESRL/NESII, OFCM/AOC, DTC, NCAR, and the broader research community.
The Contributor’s Guide provides information on contribution standards and processes for developers interested in contributing to HAFS. Among other topics, it includes:

See the HAFS v2.0.0 (Major) release notes for information on the operational HAFS v2 release, which took place on July 16, 2024. It corresponds to the production/hafs.v2 branch. See the Tags page for more information on the tags associated with recent/planned releases. Currently, community support for releases is limited, but users are welcome to adapt the release code for use in their research.
