So I'm using Ubuntu 17.10 (tested both Wayland and Xorg) and with your plugin, I've got the window buttons on the right side of the active window's title, when maximized (tried with left and right window button setup in Tweaker, but they just don't want to move from the right side of the window title when maximized!)

Here you can see in windowed mode the buttons are in the corner (left or right does not change anything in my case):

And here it is what it looks like when my window is maximized:

Try to disable all other extensions, is the issue still present then?

I've disabled every other extensions I have, it works! Now I have to test extensions one by one to see which one is making everything buggy. Will update when I'll found it.

After all it was the "Arc Menu" extension (there: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/1228/arc-menu/ ). I'm going to visit their GitHub page, I actually don't know who will have to correct the conflict (that's why I'm leaving this opened) but as I have other status bar extensions which are not disturbing unite-shell, I'm confident about saying it might be the Arc Menu which is causing trouble.
