this PR updates a few dependencies and removes an unnecessary config file for
release-it.I'd love to release this as
1.0.0as we've been stable for 2+ years and I don't see us making major changes right away.This also allows us to update downstream dependencies and give them a stable promise (CC @bschaatsbergen)
