I don't believe there's currently any support for block device mapping when creating AWS EC2 instances. If block device mapping isn't passed to the API when the instance is created, then no ephemeral disks will be available for the entire life of the instance. They can't be added later. Ephemeral disks are very important when using EC2 instances.
