This PR should constitute the last chunk of unmerged work from #551 manually ported over to master.
We didn't merge it before because we were anxious about the space usage, and we still should be. But this constitutes a clean branch we can keep merged over master, and hopefully someone will want to pick up on the problem and get us the last bit there. Will resolve #40
