I've tested this quickly by invoking

# Update Git submodules
git submodule sync
git submodule update --init --recursive

# Build canonical example for ESP8266
cd node-wifi-mqtt
export ESP_ROOT=~/dev/hiveeyes/sdk/esp8266-arduino
make

It compiles like a charm.
