Nowadays CMake is usually preferred to autotools. I think it is OK to keep the makefile for the time being, but this section should be removed from the documentation

@sanguinariojoe We are working on expanding/improving our CMake support for all of the currently supported options in autoconf. Until this is done, our primary build system is still autoconf.
