cannot easily switch between submenus

This is a bug unresolved from the merging of #589. Clicking on the top left menu, then clicking a submenu, if I click on anything on the main menu, the entire menu collapses.

We'd be grateful for a PR that addresses this issue.

this issue might solve most of our menu woes. If anyone wants to take this, that'd be much appreciated!

This is fixed since we no longer have submenus.
