In the last call -- https://github.com/protocol/pm-ipfs-gui/blob/master/meeting-notes/2017-12-14--ipfs-gui-kickoff.md -- we reached a consensus that WebUI needs a new name as it currently is a very misleading name or just not informative at all.

My first proposal is ipfs-control-room so that we have a:

  • ipfs-station - Docking station on a user machine
  • ipfs-control-room - Dashboard for the user to control its station and/or ship
  • ipfs-companion (or ipfs-ship !!) - The vessel that takes you through the DWeb

In my head, it makes it a sweet evolution from the era where people Surfed the Web to the era where people Spacetravel the DWeb!

Other ideas?

I'm personally fond of ipfs-control-room. Although I don't like the idea of renaming ipfs-companion to ipfs-ship. If we imagine IPFS itself as a ship, it must have:

  • A Station - to contact with
  • A Control Room - to be managed, configured, and so on
  • And... something else!

Spaaace..
Wait, what.
wait what

Station → a good name. If one of other components gets merged into it, name stays.

WebUI

  • IPFS Control Room (due to obvious reasons)
  • IPFS Node Dash / Dashboard (not as spectacular, but not bad)

Companion

  • we changed name in March (Change the name before v2.0.0 released? ipfs-companion#225), if we want to change again better give it really good makeover ;-)
  • personally I would keep the Companion name, at least for now, but ship (ha) it with customized cube icon that has some kind of companion. Perhaps we could add a browser icon slowly orbiting the cube or something like that. It could be browser-specific or a generic icon/rocket. Just an idea.

I'm not sure spaceship metaphors are that great. How about just Admin Console or Admin Panel? It's boring and very clear about what it does. It also makes it clear that it's not something you should ever expose to other hosts.

I'm fond of the space theme, but I agree, the names will be more useful if they are simple and clear.

Lots of tools with OS integrations don't bother coming up with a new name for the app version of a command line tool...

There was some agreement that station would be what we start directing not-super-techincal users at, and so for them, that app would be "ipfs" to them. So I'd go with ipfs app or ipfs for X. If that's too much of a change, then I'd at least use something like that as a tag line for it.

ipfs-companion seems kinda sweet to me, and as it's purpose is to link your browser to an ipfs instance, it feels like it communicates what it does. ipfs-add-on would be more explicit, but I don't think it's good enough to be worth changing the name.

webui should change it's name. I prefer something less intimidating like ipfs-dashboard. I doubt that not-super-technical users feel like they are an admin or would think that being one is a good thing. ipfs-control-room is fun, but, it's not a control room, and giving the feeling that ipfs needs a control room to be used, probably sends out the wrong message.

So i vote

  • ipfs-webui => IPFS Dashboard
  • ipfs-station => IPFS app or IPFS for Linux, IPFS for Windows, IPFS for OSX
  • IPFS Companion

Suggestions and votes have been cast, I feel we are ready to pick a new name.

Let's do it during our next call, Thursday.

Station → IPFS Desktop

Done, Station is now known as IPFS Desktop: https://github.com/ipfs-shipyard/ipfs-desktop ✔️

WebUI → ?

Lars raised some concerns about proposed WebUI names: ipfs/ipfs-webui#612 (comment) ✖️
Let's continue brainstorming there.

There are no plans to rename Web UI in the near future. It's called IPFS Web UI for humans and ipfs-webui for machines.
