Cloth diapers section #32
Conversation
Promise I will give this the attention/focus/time it deserves as soon as my client-work demo is delivered. 🤞 |
I see this has been assigned to me and is awaiting review. I just finished reading all the issues attached to this section. Let me know what you would like me to do next. I'm happy to help research Flushable Diaper Liners if that's what you guys have decided from the 💩 issue lol 😃 |
@Stephanymtr If you go the the files section of this 'pull request' as it's called, you can see all the stuff I've written Then You can review it! Just click on the '+' at the beginning of any line you want to add a comment to if you have any comments! |

@Stephanymtr This actually gives us 1 layer of hemp + 4 layers of bamboo because the bamboo doubler is two layers, so folded over it gives us 4 layers. I'll clarify, thank you!
### Absorbency capacity | ||

This sentence could be significantly condensed; It's 55 words / 344 characters. i.e. more than 2 tweets! 😮
Ref: https://insidegovuk.blog.gov.uk/2014/08/04/sentence-length-why-25-words-is-our-limit/
Every baby may appear different to their parents ...
but they all have similar traits and belong to a distribution curve.
You could break up the mega sentence into chunks:
Each baby will urinate a varying amount depending on their level of hydration/nursing.
Some babies may drink/nurse less where as others in hotter climates may perspire more
and thus their absorbency needs will differ.
Babies can be 'medium to heavy wetters' and thus need more absorbency.
If this is the case for your baby, hemp inserts (typically used in pocket diapers)
or boosters (typically layered into other types of diapers) can be used to increase absorbency.
The shorter your sentences, the wider the appeal of your content
and the easier tired/busy people will be able to scan it. 💭

### Absorbency speed | ||
This is important for two reasons: | ||
1. You need to layer your absorbency so that the layers closer to the baby |

Another looong sentence consider splitting:
1. You need to layer your absorbency so that the layers closer to the baby | |
1. Diaper inserts should be layered so that the one in contact with the baby's skin absorbs fastest. | |
The initial layer wicks away moisture quickly to prevent leaks and discomfort. | |
The outer layer(s) can have a slower absorbency speed but higher (storage) capacity such that liquid is "transferred" from the first to second layer after the urination event. |
Feel free to ignore this. Just consider breaking up your 44 character sentence as it's way beyond readability to a tired/busy parent. 💭

Adding this one to issue #35 as well because the suggestion isn't technically right - you can't put microfiber (the fastest absorbing insert) in contact with the baby's skin as it gives them an almighty rash 👍

Inês, you might be projecting words into my suggestion that aren't there.
At no point have I mentioned the word "microfibre".
As for the "almighty rash" ...
Maybe share a link to where what you say was tested empirically.
If it's anecdotal, then maybe share a photo if there is one.
Because if not, then it's hearsay. i.e. unsubstantiated.
Basically most of the noise on Facebook posted by unscientific amateurs.
Note: I'm not saying this isn't true.
Just that I haven't seen any evidence.
The fabric used in microfibre is
"ultra-fine synthetic fibres such as polyester, polyamide, or polypropylene"
https://sewport.com/fabrics-directory/microfibre-fabric
This is the same stuff they use in disposable diapers.
https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/disposable-diaper
These are in contact with sensitive skin on a massive scale.
Perhaps the diaper manufacturers also make nappy rash cream. 💭

You have not. You've said that the insert that absorbs fastest should be in contact with the baby's skin.
The insert that absorbs the fastest is microfibre, as mentioned several times throughout this document. So whilst you haven't stated you should put microfibre next to the baby's skin, it could be erroneously inferred.
This isn't a 'facebook noise' thing. This is a well-known anecdote amongst all cloth-diapering parents, on and offline.
I will update the wording #49
are the ones that absorb liquids the fastest - this will allow that layer to | ||
absorb the liquids and wick them away to the lower layers which will have more | ||
storage capacity. | ||
2. If you have a baby who 'floods'; i.e. releases a large quantity of liquid |

This second list item is much better. Shorter/clearer sentences. 👌

#### Dosing your detergent appropriately | ||
1. Powder detergent rinses off your diapers more easily than liquid detergent |

what is the science on this? surely a liquid that is already dissolved would be easier to rinse? 💭
not saying you are "wrong", just that you need to make it clear that either you have done the science (experimental evidence) or that this is the "consensus" on the forums.
1. Powder detergent rinses off your diapers more easily than liquid detergent | ||
so ideally, **use powder**. | ||
2. Use 'real' detergent, not baby detergent or for sensitive skin as these do not | ||
wash as efficiently. |

according to who? 🤷♂️
surely the fact that P&G have invested hundreds of millions into researching and developing "baby detergents" there must be some reasoning ...
perhaps help clarify that "baby detergents" are for keeping outer clothes soft but don't work anywhere near as well on diapers that need more in-depth cleaning. 💭

I'll clarify. They're fine for dirt, not for human waste 💩
5. Use the dose of detergent recommended for **heavily soiled** clothing (which | ||
is an additional amount over the amount recommended for your machine size) | ||
6. Add the powder directly to the drum to get the most out of it and | ||
prevent gumming up your machine's tubes. |

You could easily put together a table of machine/tub size, load, "soiling" level and detergent quantity. 💭
e.g:
⬇️ Dirt Level / Machine Capacity ➡️ | 5kg / 11lb | 8kg / 18lb | 10kg / 22lb | 12kg / 26lb |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mild: e.g: just pee | X grams / Y oz | etc. | ||
Normal: regular poop | ||||
Heavily Soiled |
Would take 5 mins to calculate this for a given detergent.
And would be very "link-worthy" / "shareable" (SEO) content.

The only reason this isn't possible is because the quantities are different for every powder detergent I have used to date 🤦♀️

@iteles this is a really good intro to the topic and specifically a starting point your/our system. 👍
I've left a few comments/suggestions. Feel free to integrate them or ignore if you just want to "ship"
Happy to discuss any points. But really keen to get this published ASAP. 🚀
